The community of Milton is mourning the loss of Kavindu Wijayawardena, a recent graduate of Milton District High School and a passionate motorcyclist, who tragically died in a motorcycle accident on Sunday afternoon. His death has deeply affected friends, family, and those who knew him, leaving a void in the hearts of many.

While Halton police have not officially released his name, friends and online tributes have identified the victim as Kavindu Wijayawardena. Known for his generosity, loyalty, and infectious positivity, Kavindu was widely admired for his kindness and caring nature. He was only 27 years old, but his impact on those around him was profound.

Longtime friend Saim Sohail shared his memories of Kavindu, whom he had known since middle school in 2009. The two grew up together and attended Milton District High School, forming a bond that lasted nearly two decades. Sohail described Kavindu as “the one guy you could always go to for advice,” comparing him to a big brother figure. He recounted learning about Kavindu’s death late Sunday evening after seeing social media posts and recognizing the motorcycle involved in the crash. The news hit him hard, and he said he couldn’t sleep that night.

Early Monday morning, Sohail visited the crash site, where he stayed for nearly two hours, describing the experience as “surreal.” The accident occurred around 2:40 p.m. at the intersection of Steeles Avenue and Bronte Street. According to police, Kavindu was riding a Suzuki motorcycle heading east on Steeles when it collided with a westbound Nissan SUV turning left onto Bronte. A third vehicle, a Honda sedan, was also damaged in the crash. The motorcyclist died at the scene, while the SUV driver, a 59-year-old Milton resident, and the Honda driver were not injured. Police are investigating speed and right of way as potential factors in the collision.

Friends and community members remember Kavindu as a grounded, positive individual who was always there for others. Sohail highlighted how Kavindu supported everyone around him, whether through advice, basketball tips, or encouragement in his personal pursuits. “When I became a real estate agent, he was the first one to congratulate me,” Sohail said, emphasizing his friend’s genuine support and kindness. Kavindu had also played a significant role in the local basketball scene, volunteering with leagues like the Under Dog League, founded by a mutual friend. He contributed by coaching, reffing, playing, and even taking photographs. The league paid tribute on Facebook, saying, “You put your imprint on everything we do… can’t thank you enough,” and sharing heartfelt messages of admiration.

In recent years, Kavindu had shifted his focus toward fitness, faith, and personal growth. Though he was a car enthusiast, he sold his vehicle about a year ago to pursue a new passion—motorcycling—which he often shared on Instagram. His friends plan to honor his memory by returning to the crash site Monday night with flowers and signs and hope to visit his family to offer support.

The Halton police are urging anyone with dashcam footage or information related to the collision to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 905-825-4747 ext. 5065 or via email. Kavindu’s passing serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community support in times of tragedy.
